There is much to reflect on from the crit: I presented the images of the protagonist holding the ship in the bottle, the anchorlier and the astrolabe (to show my progress). The key thing is that my classmates and tutor were most drawn to my current image-making, i.e. the anchorlier. However, the reason they liked it was because of the shadows the object makes. This is a huge wake-up call about how long i am spending on making theses objects. Especially when the shadows (a minor part of my process) are the most effective element of the image. It is very possible that I could create the same shadows by cutting flat images into paper.
They suggested the following things:
- Use a different space for photographing the images- Contact the photography department to see if I can hire out the studio space.
-Alternatively buy rolls of paper to create a backdrop.
-Make use of the overhead projector as a source of light and making the large shadows.
With not much time left on this project, I have to direct my focus on finishing the poster. I am going to create a series of 4 or 5 compositions, of which the costume department can choose one for the final poster. I am disappointed that i have not been able to explore as many techniques as first anticipated due to getting myself worked up. However, this project is allowing me to see that I can use my inspiration from theatre to make my illustrations more performative and theatrical.
