Astrolabe object

Last week, during my discussion with the client, BA (hons) Costume Senior Lecturer, Will, stressed how much he liked the idea of creating 3D objects, and particularly liked the anchor/chandelier. However, the naval imagery was becoming a little obvious and reminiscent of pirates rather than the navy. The idea of looking at old navigational equipment came up, this wraps in the naval imagery with the protagonist's hope to be reunited with the love interest.

I went about making a 3D image of an astrolabe incorporating a simple silhouette....

The object brought together a few techniques i had used in a couple of the previous experiments. I've tried to make the object look a little distorted by making it asymmetrical. I think this gives it a little bit of depth when photographed. The black card certainly works better than the cardboard, as it looks much more glossy and sharp as an image.

In terms of how it has been photographed, It has to be much more considered. As the paper has been taped together, the light catches the edges. This takes attention away from the object itself. I propose to either use a white sheet as a background or larger paper. In terms of composition, I feel that the object needs more around it to put it into context. Perhaps it would be an idea to make other smaller objects and make up a desk....

In this photoshoot experiment, I have used two different lights. A strong studio light and a desk lamp (with a considerably darker tinted bulb). Personally, I think the images with the tinted bulb are more inviting than the others. Said that, I'd prefer to explore using more colour lighting.
